Litter is a significant issue along the roadways of the Northern Neck. Every piece of trash on the side of the road eventually finds its way into the Rappahannock River or one of the other major bodies of water in the area, making its way to the Chesapeake Bay. Litter both on land and in the water has major detrimental effects on wildlife populations, habitat, water quality, and human health. In the NNK, our waterways are an essential part of our culture, economy, and way of life, so we must do everything we can to protect them.
Join Friends of the Rappahannock and the Northern Neck Planning District Commission at our NNK Summer Cleanup Series and help keep our waterways clean! On the first Thursday of every month from June through September we will meet from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. to clean up our roadways. Each month will focus on a different county, with the first month based in Lancaster.
On June 3rd we will meet at Kilmarnock Town Centre Park at 5:30 p.m. to break into cleanup teams with the goal to tackle trash on three different roadways in Lancaster County. All supplies will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring water, snacks, bug spray, sunscreen, and gloves.
If you or someone you know would like to participate, please register in advance.
