Tree-Planting Project

The Northern Neck Planning District Commission (NNPDC) has been awarded funding from the Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF) for a tree-planting project in honor of the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution.

The project, 250 for 250: Improving the Northern Necks tree canopy for the Semiquincentennial, will plant trees at multiple sites in the Northern Neck, including Stratford Hall, Menokin, the Fones Cliffs Unit of the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Longwood University’s Baliles Center for Environmental Education, and the new Lancaster County High School.

The tree-planting project was funded through the VDOF’s Virginia Trees for Clean Water program and will be implemented in partnership with Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR), a watershed-protection organization based in Fredericksburg.

Sarah Dishman, Forestry Programs Manager at FOR, assisted with the application to the Virginia Department of Forestry’s Urban & Community Forestry program. Sarah said, “I look forward to working with these Northern Neck properties in this project to bring attention to the declining tree canopy in the Northern Neck and add trees to the region to provide multiple ecosystem services for cleaner Virginia waterways.”

In support of NNK250, Stella-Jones in Warsaw, a manufacturer of pressure-treated wood products, is the designated mulch supplier for the NNK250 project, and will be providing 10 cubic yards of hardwood bark mulch.

The NNPDC oversees the Northern Neck Tourism Commission, and the Northern Neck National Heritage Area, which is coordinating the regional commemoration of the Semiquincentennial.  For more information on Semiquincentennial events, visit nnk250.us.
