January 16, 2019 Presentation: “Climate Change in Our Own Backyard”

Please join the Northern Neck Master Gardeners for a presentation by Bud Ward on “Climate Change in Our Own Backyard” on Wednesday, January 16, at 11 a.m. at the Transportation Building, Rice’s Hotel/ Hughlett’s Tavern, 73 Monument Place, Heathsville.  The presentation is free and open to the public.

Based on the most current scientific understanding of climate change/global warming, this presentation will look at the warming climate as it affects low-lying coastal communities and eco-systems, including how it may increasingly influence weather- and climate-sensitive gardening and agricultural activities.  Ward will explore how the timing of seasonal changes might evolve in coming years and decades; how these changes lead to early arrivals, for instance, of spring, or to later initial freezes in winter; and how the changes affect animal and plant species.  Ward also will discuss scientific research on climate communications and the public’s understanding of climate change. He will offer insights of particular interest to the Northern Neck.

Bud Ward, a resident of White Stone, is an environmental journalist and educator with a distinguished career in natural resources and environmental issues.  He is the editor of Yale University’s “Yale Climate Connections.”
